Back at The Smugglers

Back at The Smugglers, on Friday as a punter listening to dj Ian and on Saturday behind the decks. The decks now being a laptop and a m-audio xponent midi controller. Less sexy but a hell of a lot less stuff to carry in and out.
In olden times the one thing that stressed me the most was scouring through the cd cases looking for the next track whilst watching the time remaining on the playing track diminish rapidly. All the time knowing that it took a good 30 seconds to load the cd up, even if you were rash and didn't give it a quick clean first, check it through the headphones and cue it up. Then there is the high number of occasions when the song you thought in your head was perfect actually turns out to sound like some obscure 80s b side with the production values of a thrupenny bit. And then you have to play it anyway because you ain't got time to change it. This is always followed by an announcement that the song was a request for some imaginary customer thus exonerating yourself from any blame.

(Competition time: What songs do you djs reluctantly play and then, so as everyone knows it was not your choice, clearly tell all and sundry that it was a request?
Any acts you don't play? I no longer play Meatloaf, ever. If someone asks I just nicely say No. )It's purely a prejudice thing. Sorry, I digress.

Today, on the laptop screen you can find any song you have and load it up in seconds. As you can organise all your tunes by genre then if your first choice turns out to be less than robust you can find an alternative pretty fast.

The downside is that punters now assume you have every song ever released on you and , therefore, should be able to play it- like now, this second!

The joys.

Tracklisting from last night below.

Quiet until 10pm then it picked up well until 0021 when all the kids rushed off to The Arms. At least they stayed until the last possible minute.

Requests, just two both from the same person, for Black Eyed Peas which I'd played earlier but lets face it if you ask nicely and are wearing hot pants there is a high liklihood that the dj will oblige! Also asked for 'Man in the Mirror' which turnedout out be much slower than I remembered. Managed to squeeze it in though, just as she left for The Arms!!
