Playlist for July 25th
Popular wisdom tells us we are in the middle of a recession. The pub trade is losing fifty two licensed premises a week to the credit crunch. There is little sign of this in The Smugglers each week. Even with the stiff competition of a large wedding taking place at The Centre and a disco event in The Granary the Smugglers continued to be packed this week-end.
The only down side remains the fact that the rival 'Arms' has a late licence until 2am and operates a curfew which means that many of the younger punters up sticks and head off there between nidnight and quarter past thus taking away a lot of the atmosphere I have spent three hours building up.
As a dj this leads to the evening having a peak around 2345 rather than an hour later and can make the last 45 minutes a bit disquieting. For the last half hour I tend to have a look at the remaining stalwarts and try to play some tunes to suit. If it is too quiet I just play some popular sing a long stuff. When I can get away with it I'll try to hear some songs that I want to check out through the sound system. So last night I had a listen to Friendly Fires 'Jump in the Pool'.
I know some djs who have a no request after midnight policy. At times I wish I did the same. It must be another quaint side effect of alcohol that dictates that someone who has been in the bar for three hours quite content will rush up to the booth exactly fifteen minutes before the end a ask for a style of music that is completely the opposite of what is being played. With the bar being quiet and generally being an accommodating person I try my best but this means the smooth logical musical journey to the close of the night is suddenly ripped apart by Bon Jovi!
Next, emboldened by the first punter, another three folk come up and ask for another three requests all in different styles. I usually just put them on one after another which often leaves the night ending on a disparate mish mash redeemed only by a closing tune of my choice.
Last night also blew in one of the noted '10 things not to say to a dj'. Usual young girl, usual request for some pop trivia or rnb lite toon from the charts(in this case Beyonce and the dire Pussycat Dolls new one) with the plea that could I play it now as they were just about to be leaving. The dj's job is to keep people IN the bar spending money. If you are going then I'll play the songs for those that are staying in the hope they have better taste all round.

What I also learned last night is that the good folk of Stewarton have not yet caught up with Dizee Rascall's new one and that La Roux has based her Bulletproof on an old Depeche Mode song.
My fave toon was 'Flashback' by Wolfgang Gartner followed by Sander Kleinberg's 'This is our night'.
Till next time.
